Pottery - Wendy Greenwood
Wendy Greenwood from Greenwood Crafts will be demonstrating pottery on her kick wheel and will also be showing how Raku pottery is made.

Quilting - Scarborough Heirloom Quilters



Lace Making - Cleveland Lace Guild. Cleveland Lace Guild has approx 90 members, who have an interest in lace. There are monthly meeting/workshops, which cover a wide range of crafts, including bobbin lace, needle lace, patchwork, beading, embroidery and crochet, but with a major emphasis on lace. Meetings are held on Saturdays at Egglescliffe Community Centre, Durham Lane, Eaglesliffe, TS16 0EH, from 10am to 3.30pm. The next meeting is on 14th September. Visitors pay £1 for the day, members pay £3 per year. Bring your own craft work and a packed lunch. At 1pm, Pat Martin will give a talk  on 'The Royal Wedding Flowers' and Lacemaid will be there with lace supplies. For more details, phone 01642 783840.

Stone Carving - Jennifer Tetlow. Jennifer Tetlow was introduced to the possibilities of carving and sculpting in stone many years ago as a consequence of living in an area with a strong history of quarrying and tradition of stoneworking. She became a full-time sculptor in 1999 and is self-taught. www.jennifertetlow.co.uk 

Clog Making - Mike Cahill
We will also see Clog maker Mike Cahill, demonstrating his interesting craft near the museums own old cobblers workshop.


Bush Crafts - Mark Barker
Mark Barker will be demonstrating how to light fires using sparks and birch bark and making wooden 'flowers' by shaving wood.Mark has substantial experience in outdoor education, including most recently as the Forestry Commission's Educational Ranger at Dalby Forest. Building upon a lifetime's passion for the culture and history of American Indians, he has a wealth of bushcraft knowledge

Morris Dancing - Briggate Morris Dancers
Briggate Morris are a women's group who dance Northwest style Morris. They have members ranging from 8years old to founding members who are in their 80's.

Award Winners!

Last night we were crowed the winner of the White Rose Tourism Award for Small Visitor Attraction of the year! We were up against some stiff competition including the James Herriot Museum and the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds, so were over the moon to win this prestigious award, and were honestly shocked when they called our name, I had to quickly put my shoes on to get on the stage! With us being so hidden away, and to win out of the entire of Yorkshire  is an incredible achievement , all the staff and volunteers at the museum have worked really hard to improve the experience for our visitors, and it is so nice that all that hard work has been recognised. You can’t stand still in times like this, we rely on visitors coming through the door to afford to open each year, and to do that we need to continuously be improving our offer and opening the museum up to new audiences. Ryedale Calling Ecuador

Ryedale Calling Ecuador was an evening event held at the museum as part of the current family learning project. A live Skype-Video weblink was established allowing families from Ryedale to communicate directly with families from Ecuador. This was an opportunity to learn about the differences and similarities between our cultures. We discovered we share many traditions such as Christmas Carols and a similar Father Christmas tradition. There were also many differences such as national dress, food, wildlife and schooling among others. For some highlights of the night click on the videos below. One of the participants, Declan, was kind enough to bring his guitar and played some Christmas songs to those in Ecuador. The video below is of an improvised version of 'silent night', a song the Ecuador families knew in Spanish. There Be Pirates Perform in The Manor House

California based band 'There Be Pirates' put on a stirring performance at the museum on Sunday. Visitors packed out the Manor House to see and hear the pirates' music performed, and to take part themselves, children of visitors were encouraged to provide backing music as drums and maracas were distributed among the audience.
