Passing Of A Great Volunteer - John Nicoll

Image
A much valued and respected volunteer John Nicoll died suddenly on March 14th. John was always someone who I regarded (like many volunteers/museum staff) as a good friend. He always worked to a very high standard and got the job done. In particular the model village is a monument to his labours, I took dozens of photos of the restoration as it progressed, it is a credit to John and his wife Colleen. John will be missed by us all at the museum. Jonathan S

50th Anniversary Events

This year we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary, to do this we are running special 50th Anniversary events each month in 2014 alongside our normal events programme. The events are based on themes which represent our core values, and which we continue to champion. About us… Ryedale Folk Museum was created by local people out of a passion for their heritage and we have and always will be committed to being a part of the community we inhabit. The Museum began when Wilfred Crosland and his sisters occupied the house and barn that now form the entrance to the Museum. His many interests included collecting old farm implements and craft tools, which he stored and displayed in the barn. After WWII, as Wilfred’s interest became ever more widely known, local people gave more objects; eventually whole buildings came along. Local, Bert Frank, collaborated with practical help and advice, and became the first full-time curator when the Museum officially opened in 1964. It w...

Halloween 2013

Image
The Halloween party at Ryedale Folk Museum was fantastic. Activities included apple bobbing, crafts, and a pumpkin competition. There were witches and vampires present in large quantities, and also lovely hot-dogs and soup served by the Simms family. Sausages supplied by Beadlam Grange Farm Shop (they are delicious by the way).Buy them here: http://www.beadlamgrange.co.uk/ Above all the best bit of the night was a great act by a few vampires which included leaping out of coffins, a ghostly dance display and spooky story telling. They did a great rendition of 'Three Little Pigs'. There was a good crowd present and the event was enjoyed by all, meself included. Jonathan S

Today At the Museum

Image
It was a bit cold today at the museum, but we are always open for business whatever the weather.  David and I made some more progress with the Lister hay turner, giving it a wire brush down and painting the wheels. John Nicoll came in to do some work on the windmill sails from the model village. David took some good photos of the model village, you'd nearly think it was full scale, not miniature with the snow.
