Ryedale Folk Museum

Some of the activities happening onsite over the weekend.  Our free entry day on Sunday the 14th was a great success with over 400 people in attendance.  We are now all getting ready and gearing up for next weeks half term activities.  Staff and volunteers will be manning the cooking and craft workshops and preparing trails on site.  CG

The final part of Edward Harrison's demonstration of Fire making equipment and objects from the collection. Once again Edward Harrison was kind enough to talk me through some of the huge Harrison Collection. One of Edwards favourite subjects within the collection is fire-lighting. The collection contains a huge array of ingenious devices to light fire. Fantastic inventions as well as basic essential devices such as the tinder box. The Harrison Collection until 8th March 2009 10am – 4.30pm (last admission 3.30pm) The Harrison collection consists of over 10 thousand pieces, some of them unique, and its creation has been the lifetime’s work of the Harrison brothers who began collecting at the age of five. Edward has become an authority on collectables and their social history and has advised the BBC on various programs. It is this passion and knowledge combined with the collection that makes it so exciting. Edward and Richard, who have lived in Ryedale all of their lives, want the collection to stay in North Yorkshire in a rural location for public benefit. It is a truly eclectic, eccentric collection and very much in the spirit and tradition of the early collectors whose collections are the basis of our major museums today.
